The Difficulty Adjustment

Bitcoin’s Self Correcting Clock

The Signal

Bitcoin adjusts mining difficulty to keep blocks arriving near a ten minute average as mining power changes.

The Reading

Imagine a clock that counts blocks instead of seconds. Each new block is another tick.

Tick-tock, next block.

Mining power constantly changes. Machines switch on and off. Without correction, more machines would speed blocks up and fewer machines would slow them down.

Deep inside the engine room, Bitcoin corrects itself. After every 2,016 blocks, each node checks how long they took. The target is about two weeks, averaging roughly ten minutes per block.

If the blocks arrived too quickly, the next mining puzzle becomes harder. If they arrived too slowly, it becomes easier. No boss decides. Every node follows the same rule and knows the difficulty the next block must meet.

Blocks are not punctual. One may arrive quickly and another much later. Ten minutes is the target average.

If many miners unplug, blocks may slow until the next adjustment. Bitcoin then lowers the difficulty so the remaining miners can bring the rhythm back towards its target.

Bitcoin’s supply clock counts blocks, not years. The amount of new bitcoin released with each block halves every 210,000 blocks. At the ten minute average, that is roughly four years. The adjustment does not cause the halving. It helps keep the block clock near its intended pace.

The world panics. Markets fall. Miners leave. Bitcoin keeps following the same rule.

Tick-tock, next block.

First Principles

Ten minutes is Bitcoin’s target average, not a promise for every block.

Every 2,016 blocks, the difficulty adjusts to guide the rhythm back towards its target.

The halving occurs every 210,000 blocks, making it roughly a four year cycle.

Today’s Challenge

Place twenty dry beans in a cup. Put an empty cup beside it and set a ten second timer.

Use a spoon to move every bean into the empty cup. If you finish too quickly, repeat with a smaller spoon. If you finish too slowly, repeat with a larger spoon.

The target stayed the same. The task changed to bring your time closer to it.

Bitcoin works in a similar way. Mining power may change, but the difficulty adjusts to guide blocks back towards the same average rhythm.
