The Lottery Nobody Can Cheat

Every Chance Must Be Earned

The Signal

Bitcoin mining is a lottery where hashing creates every attempt and Bitcoin’s target decides the winner.

The Reading

Imagine rolling two dice. A total of three or less wins. Nobody chooses the roll. It either meets the target or it does not.

Inside The Engine Room, Bitcoin mining uses hashing instead of dice.

A miner groups transactions into a block, changes a number in its header, then hashes the header. That result is one attempt.

Every hash is a number. Bitcoin’s rules set another number called the target. A hash wins only at or below the target. Miners cannot choose the result or move the target.

Nobody chooses the target. Every 2,016 blocks, nodes recalculate it from how quickly the last 2,016 arrived. Too fast moves it lower, making winning harder. Too slow moves it higher, making winning easier. Same history, same rules, same answer.

If the hash misses, the miner changes the number and hashes again. New number. New hash. New attempt. Each hash is the ticket, draw and result combined.

Although mining looks like a lottery, every chance requires real work. Machines perform calculations and use electricity until a winning hash appears. This computational work is called proof of work.

The winning miner sends the block to the network. Nodes check the hash and every transaction. Break one rule and the block loses. Only a valid block can join the shared book and earn the reward.

First Principles

Every hash produces one new mining attempt.

Bitcoin’s target decides which hashes qualify as winners.

Nodes calculate the target and reject blocks that break the rules.

Today’s Challenge

Find two dice and place a coin or treat as the prize. Set the winning target at three.

Take turns rolling both dice. Add their numbers. A total of three or less wins. Continue until someone wins.

Now lower the target to two. Only double one wins. Notice that a lower target is harder to hit. Raise it to five and winning becomes easier.

Each roll creates an unpredictable number. The target decides whether it wins. More rolls provide more chances, but nobody can command the result. Once a winning roll appears, everyone can check it instantly.
