Checking Bitcoin for Yourself
The Signal
Your node lets you check Bitcoin’s rules yourself instead of trusting someone else’s answer.
The Reading
Imagine playing a game where one person holds the only rulebook. They deal the cards, keep the score and decide whether every move is allowed. In the end, you rely on their version of the rules. Now put that rulebook in your hands. You no longer need to trust their answer. You can check it yourself. That is what a Bitcoin node gives you.
Miners can send your node new blocks. Other computers can send transactions, but your node does not accept them because someone says they are valid. It checks. Was the spending authorised? Has the same bitcoin already been spent? Is the proof of work valid? Has new bitcoin been created according to Bitcoin’s rules?
If something fails, your node rejects it. That is remarkable independence inside a computer. A miner cannot command your node to accept an invalid block. An exchange cannot decide the rules for you. Another computer cannot replace verification with authority. “Your node, your rules” does not mean inventing whatever rules you like. It means choosing the Bitcoin software you run, then enforcing those rules yourself. You are no longer borrowing someone else’s view of Bitcoin. You have your own.

Today’s Challenge
Ask someone in your home to think of any ordinary fact they are certain about: the time a shop closes, spelling of a difficult word, the distance between two towns, anything that you would need to verify.
Before checking, write down their answer. Then verify it yourself using a source you trust. They may be completely right.
Now look at the two moments. In the first, you had an answer because someone told you. In the second, you had an answer because you checked.
Nothing physical changed. The fact may not even have changed but your relationship to the information did. For a few seconds, notice that feeling. That small shift, from relying on someone else to knowing for yourself. This is one of the ideas behind running your own node.
