Fees
Paying For Priority And Security
The Signal
Bitcoin fees are not a penalty. They are the market price for scarce block space and a reward to the miners who secure it.
The Reading
Imagine sending two parcels. One must arrive immediately. The other can wait. Paying more for the urgent parcel is not a punishment. You are choosing priority.
Bitcoin works similarly. Each block has limited space, while transactions waiting can change. When many people want that space, fees rise. When demand is quieter, fees can fall. If your transaction is urgent, you can offer a higher fee rate. If you can wait, you can often offer less.
The fee is not based on how much bitcoin you send. It is mainly based on how much space your transaction uses in the block. Fees are measured in satoshis per virtual byte, or sat/vB. Your wallet estimates the transaction’s virtual size, looks at conditions and suggests a fee rate. In simple terms: transaction size multiplied by the chosen fee rate gives the fee. A transaction moving a fortune can cost about the same as one moving much less if both use similar block space.
That fee goes to the miner who includes the transaction in a block. Miners also receive the block subsidy. As the subsidy halves, transaction fees become increasingly important to miner revenue. Fees therefore do something useful: they allocate scarce block space and help pay miners for the work that helps secure the Bitcoin network.
A Bitcoin fee can still become expensive when block space is crowded. That is the market working, not a hidden charge. You can see the fee before sending and decide whether the speed is worth the cost.
First Principles
Bitcoin fees pay miners for including transactions in scarce block space.
Fees depend mainly on transaction size and the fee rate, not the amount of bitcoin being sent.
Higher fee rates generally buy greater priority when blocks are busy.
Today’s Challenge
Imagine two identical parcels. One must arrive today. The other can arrive next week.
Which one would you willingly pay more to send? Now replace parcels with Bitcoin transactions.
The extra payment is not punishment. It is your choice to buy priority in scarce block space. That is a Bitcoin fee.
