Layers

Building More On A Strong Foundation

The Signal

Bitcoin does not need to do everything on its base layer. It needs to be strong enough for other layers to build above it.

The Reading

Think about the internet. Most people never think about TCP/IP, the basic rules moving information between computers. They simply open websites, shop, stream, message and use social media. Entire industries flourished because a dependable foundation already existed underneath them. Bitcoin can grow in a similar way.

The base layer is the foundation. It records transactions under shared rules and provides settlement without depending on a bank or company. Its job is not to process every possible financial action directly. Its job is to remain secure, predictable and resistant to casual change.

Above that foundation, other layers can specialise. They can make payments faster, cheaper or easier. They can support small everyday transactions, business payments and new financial services without weakening the base. Some activity can happen away from the base chain, then return to Bitcoin when final settlement or enforcement is needed.

That matters because scale does not always mean making the foundation bigger. A house can gain rooms, wiring, plumbing and technology without replacing its concrete slab. The better approach is often to keep the foundation strong and let specialised systems grow above it. Bitcoin’s base layer anchors settlement. Higher layers can carry more activity.

Tomorrow we will look at Lightning, one example of this idea. But the larger lesson is more important: Bitcoin can remain simple at its core while innovation expands around it. Not every higher layer gives exactly the same guarantees. Different designs make different trade-offs. The foundation allows those choices to exist without asking Bitcoin itself to become everything.

First Principles

Bitcoin’s base layer provides the settlement foundation.

Higher layers can add speed, scale and new services without requiring every action to happen on the base chain.

A strong foundation allows innovation above it while keeping the core rules focused.

Today’s Challenge

Look at the building you are in. Notice the walls, lights, taps, internet, appliances and rooms.

Now imagine removing the foundation. Everything above it loses support.

Bitcoin’s layers work the same way. The services may change and multiply over time. The foundation is what lets them stand.
