Confirmations

When a Payment Settles Into History

The Signal

A Bitcoin transaction becomes more secure as new blocks are built after it. Each confirmation pushes that transaction deeper into Bitcoin’s shared history.

The Reading

Imagine sending an important letter through a glass post office. At first, everyone can see the letter, but it has not yet entered the official record. In Bitcoin, a transaction at this stage is called unconfirmed. It has reached the network and is waiting to enter a block.

When the transaction enters a block, it receives its first confirmation. When another block is added, the transaction has two confirmations. Another block makes three. The blocks keep building, placing the transaction deeper into the chain. A confirmation is not a person checking the payment and pressing an approve button. It shows that the transaction has entered Bitcoin’s shared book and that more Bitcoin history has been built after it. Changing a transaction with one confirmation would mean replacing the block containing it. Changing one with six confirmations would also mean replacing the blocks built after it, then catching up with the honest network. Each confirmation makes that task harder.

There are Bitcoin blockchain browsers, usually called blockchain explorers. They allow anyone to view historical transactions recorded on the blockchain. A visible part of each transaction is its confirmations. The sender and receiver do not have to depend on someone’s promise. They can open Bitcoin’s shared book and check for themselves. Here is what one historical transaction showed when it was viewed:

BITCOIN TRANSACTION
TRANSACTION STATUS
In block: 885,235 ✓
Confirmations: 82,427

The count was a snapshot from that moment. It continues rising as new blocks are added. People may accept a small payment quickly but wait for several confirmations before accepting a very large payment. More confirmations mean the transaction has settled more deeply into Bitcoin’s history. This is part of the Engine Room. Confirmations turn a new transaction into a record that becomes steadily harder to disturb.

First Principles

A transaction receives its first confirmation when it enters a block.

Every block added afterwards gives it another confirmation.

More confirmations place the transaction more deeply in Bitcoin’s history.

Today’s Challenge

Open a Bitcoin blockchain explorer. Choose a transaction and find its confirmations. Then say: “Each confirmation is another block built after this transaction.”

You have watched Bitcoin turn a payment into history.
