Price Is Communication
Listening to What Prices Are Saying
The Signal
Prices are not just numbers. They are messages.
The Reading
Imagine walking through a weekend market where two nearly identical tables sit side by side. Both sell fresh strawberries. One stall has a long line of eager customers despite charging $6 a punnet. The other has no queue at all, even though the price is only $4.
Without speaking to anyone, you have already learned something.
The prices are communicating.
Perhaps one farmer is known for exceptional quality. Perhaps the strawberries are sweeter. Perhaps people simply trust that seller more. Whatever the reason, every purchase becomes part of a conversation between buyers and sellers.
Prices do far more than tell us what something costs. They tell us what people are willing to exchange for it at that moment in time.
Every day, millions of these decisions take place. A family chooses one house over another. A collector purchases an old coin. A café lowers the price of yesterday’s pastries. A rare painting sells for millions while another struggles to attract a single buyer.
Each price tells a story.
It reflects the countless decisions made by ordinary people, each acting on their own needs, knowledge and preferences.
The next time you see a price, remember that you are not simply looking at a number.
You are looking at information.
First Principles
Prices communicate information.
Every exchange reveals what people are willing to give and receive.
Prices help people make better decisions without needing to know everything.
Today’s Challenge
Walk through a supermarket, shopping centre or local market. Choose three products that surprise you because they seem either very expensive or surprisingly cheap.
For each one, don’t ask: “Is this price right?”
Instead ask: “What might this price be trying to tell me?”
- Is demand unusually high?
- Is quality different?
- Is supply limited?
- Has something changed that I cannot yet see?
Remember…
Every price is sending a message. The question is whether we are listening.
