Why Power Wants Money

When Control of Money Becomes Control of People

The Signal

Whoever controls money can influence how society stores and surrenders its work.

The Reading

Imagine working for years and saving from every wage. Those savings represent mornings you rose early, purchases you postponed and value you contributed but chose not to consume. Money is meant to preserve that effort until you need it.

Now imagine that someone else can alter the money in which your effort is stored. They did not perform your work. Yet by weakening the money, they can decide how much of your contribution you can reclaim. This is why power has always wanted control of money. Rulers need resources to reward supporters, build armies and wage wars. Direct taxation is visible. People see what has been removed. Changing the money can be harder to see.

Emperor Nero reduced the weight and precious-metal content of Roman coins. More coins could be produced from the same metal. The state gained spending power while everyone holding those coins carried part of the cost. No soldier needed to enter each home. The transfer occurred inside the money itself.

Money is society’s record of stored contribution. When government controls that record, it can influence how much of yesterday’s work survives into tomorrow. The number in a person’s hand may remain unchanged while what it can purchase shrinks.

A tool designed to protect individual effort can be co-opted by those with authority to alter it. Power wants money because controlling money means gaining influence over stored time, labour and choices of society.

First Principles

Money preserves human effort for later.

Control over money allows power to redirect resources without taking them openly.

When money can be altered, every saver depends on the restraint of those who control it.

Today’s Challenge

Imagine every dollar you save as a piece of your life stored for later.

If someone can reduce what those dollars will buy without your permission, have they changed your money, or taken part of the time you exchanged to earn it?

Who should control the tool that stores your contribution to society?
