What Makes Good Money?
The Measure of Excellence
The Signal
Not everything that can be used as money should be.
The best money earns its place.
The Reading
Yesterday we discovered why money exists. It solved one of humanity’s greatest problems by making cooperation possible. But that raises another question. If anything can be used as money, why did some forms survive while others disappeared?
Imagine trying to build a house with sand instead of bricks, both are made from the earth, both have value. One performs the job far better than the other.
Money is no different. Anything can become money for a moment but only the best forms of money remain money for generations.
Throughout history, people have exchanged shells, salt, beads, livestock, tobacco, copper, silver, gold and countless other objects. Each worked, until something better came along. The world wasn’t searching for perfection instead it was searching for improvement. Good money must survive time, It must be easy to recognise and easy to carry. Easy to divide but difficult to counterfeit and perhaps most importantly, it must be difficult to create.
Imagine spending your entire life collecting rare seashells because everyone agrees they are valuable, then one day, someone discovers an island covered with billions of identical shells. Overnight, your lifetime of savings becomes almost worthless. Nothing changed about the shells themselves, only their abundance.
Money only works when people trust that tomorrow it will still perform the same job it performs today. That trust isn’t built on promises. It is built on properties. The stronger those properties become, the stronger the money becomes.
History isn’t simply the story of different currencies. It is the story of humanity constantly searching for better money and every civilisation has been asking the same question.
What is the best tool for storing the value of our work?
The answer has changed many times, but the qualities that define good money have never changed.
First Principles
Money is judged by how well it performs its job.
The strongest money isn’t chosen by opinion.
It is chosen because its properties make it the best tool available.
Today’s Challenge
Look around your home and choose three ordinary objects.
Now ask yourself, could this become money?
If not, which quality is missing?
