Imagine a carpenter spending ten hours building a beautiful dining table. When the job is finished, the table leaves his workshop, but something equally valuable returns in its place. Money. At first glance it looks like he has simply been paid. In reality, something far more profound has happened.
The carpenter has contributed his knowledge, skill and then hours of his life to society. In return, society has given him a claim on the future. That money now represents work already completed. It allows him to receive the skills and labour of others without having to build another table first.
Every honest trade works the same way. A nurse caring for patients. A farmer harvesting crops. An engineer designing a bridge. A teacher shaping young minds. Each contributes something valuable to society, and money becomes the record of that contribution.
Good money allows that contribution to survive through time. The better the money, the more it preserves value. The harder the money, the more faithfully it preserves the hours, effort and skill that a person contributed to society. When money loses its purchasing power, it doesn’t just lose value. It slowly erodes the effort people have already given to the world.
Money is far more than coins, notes, or numbers on a screen. At its best, when it faithfully preserves our contribution, it is a technology that stores the value we create today, so that we can exchange it for the effort of others who have made their own contribution to the world. We commonly call the exchange of contributions to society, buying.
