MARCH 15
A Monetary System With No Master
The Same Rules for Every Human Being
The Signal
Bitcoin offers something money has never offered before: rules the powerful must obey too.
The Reading
Look at the money in your bank account. It carries your name, but its rules belong to someone else. Banks create money when they make loans. Central banks can create reserves to buy assets. In crises, these powers can be used. On ordinary days, inflation works quietly. Prices rise and yesterday’s work buys less.
Money with a master always contains a privilege. The master can change the conditions while everyone else must live with the result. Bitcoin removed that position. No president, bank, company or billionaire can create extra bitcoin for themselves and force everyone else to accept it. The supply schedule is public. The limit is known. Transactions are judged by the same rules, whoever sends them.
Bitcoin does not see status. A billionaire and a worker may own different amounts, but neither receives different rules. Neither gets a private doorway. Neither can rewrite the record to rescue themselves. Bitcoin’s software can evolve, but no master can compel everyone to accept a change. Power cannot simply announce a new answer and make it true. That changes the meaning of trust. You are not trusting a leader to remain honest. You are verifying a system that gives no leader special authority.
Ordinary people can now save under the same monetary rules as the most powerful person alive. Ignoring that option is also a choice.
First Principles
Money with a master can be changed for the master’s purposes.
Bitcoin gives every person, rich or poor, the same monetary rules.
Confidence can come from rules everyone can verify instead of promises someone can break.
Today’s Challenge
Go to the kitchen. Place a teaspoon beside a tablespoon. Imagine the rule says everyone receives one spoonful.
Now imagine someone can use a tablespoon for themselves, a teaspoon for you, then redefine one spoonful whenever it suits them.
Would you trust that measurement? Would you accept it if your life’s work were being measured?
Bitcoin offers a system where no participant can choose a larger spoon or rewrite rules for everyone.
Look at the spoons. Which system should measure your life’s work?
