Rules Without Rulers
No One Can Change the Rules for Everyone Else

Bitcoin needs no ruler because every participant can independently reject anything that breaks its rules.
The Reading
Imagine the most powerful government on Earth announcing at midnight: Bitcoin will now have forty-two million coins. One million will enter our treasury. Every computer must comply.In an ordinary monetary system, the order travels downward. Institutions update their records. Everyone lives with the result.
Bitcoin does not obey political announcements.
The government could edit software on its computers. It could operate thousands of machines and order miners to produce a block containing its coins. Those machines might call it valid. Independent Bitcoin nodes would check and reject it. The invalid coins would never enter their records. Wealth, titles, threats and computing power cannot make an invalid block valid to nodes enforcing Bitcoin’s rules.
Bitcoin is not a ballot where owning more computers grants authority over the rulebook. A thousand nodes controlled by one ruler cannot make an independent node accept invalid rules. Anyone can change their copy of the software. They cannot force everyone else to follow. If their version breaks the shared rules, they have not captured Bitcoin. They have separated themselves from it.
Bitcoin can evolve, but lasting changes require people to adopt them voluntarily. Developers can propose. Miners can signal. Governments can demand. Billionaires can campaign. None can command the entire network. There is no ruler who must protect your savings. There are rules power alone cannot rewrite.

Bitcoin’s authority comes from independently enforced rules, not commands from above.
Changing one copy of Bitcoin does not change the copies other people choose to run.
No participant can unilaterally make invalid money valid for everyone else.
Today’s Challenge
Take a ruler and measure your phone in centimetres. Now announce each centimetre counts as two. Measure again.
Did the phone change? Did every other ruler in the world change? Would builders, shops and engineers be forced to accept your new measurement?
You are free to invent a private ruler. You cannot make the rest of the world use it. Bitcoin works on the same principle. Someone may rewrite the rules on their machine. They cannot make independent participants accept the new measurement.
