The Power of Open Source

Why Bitcoin’s Code Is Open for the World to Inspect

The Signal

Bitcoin’s strength invites examination. Its foundations are open for everyone to inspect.

The Reading

Imagine crossing a bridge whose plans are open to every engineer in the world. They can study its supports, check the calculations and test how it carries weight. Bitcoin works with that openness. Its code is a set of instructions anyone can read, copy and test. Developers can question one another, find mistakes and suggest improvements. Their work can be checked by others, too.

Open source gives us: the chance to look beneath the surface. Bitcoin’s rules are there to examine, and independent computers check that each new block follows them. Nobody can force a change simply by writing it.

But what about reports of stolen bitcoin? Sometimes the weakness is in a tool used with Bitcoin. In 2026, thieves exploited a Coldcard wallet flaw dating to 2021. They recreated wallet keys however they did not rewrite Bitcoin’s rules. Think of a faulty car crossing our bridge. The car needs attention; its failure does not mean the bridge collapsed.

Openness cannot promise perfection. It makes continued inspection possible. You do not have to understand every line of code yourself. Bitcoin’s design is open to people who can investigate it, challenge it and help strengthen it.

First Principles

Bitcoin and the wallets used with it are not the same thing.

Open code invites independent inspection.

Confidence comes from careful review, testing and enforced rules, not simply public availability.

Today’s Challenge

Ask someone to make two different teas: one in a heat-safe clear glass, the other in a dark mug.

Look carefully from the side, without tasting, smelling or peering over the rim. What can you discover about each drink?

The glass reveals colour, clarity and anything floating inside. The mug hides those clues.

You may still be unable to name either tea. Seeing more does not mean knowing everything. But it gives you something to examine instead of only a promise to believe.

Now imagine these containers represent software handling your savings. Are you drinking your tea from the glass or the mug?

Bitcoin’s open code provides the same opportunity. You need not read every instruction yourself. Others can check, question and test them for everyone.
