MARCH 5
The Problem of Trust
When Your Money Moves Only Because Someone Else Says Yes
The Signal
When someone else controls the record of your money, you must trust them with the power to control its movement.
The Reading
You are sitting across from a friend who needs twenty dollars. You take out your phone, enter the amount and press Send. A tick appears. Payment complete. But what actually moved?
No note travelled from your phone to theirs. No coin crossed the table. Records inside financial systems were changed. The payment worked because both of you trusted the people, machines and rules behind the screens.
That system keeps the official record, checks that money is available and settles payments. But a digital balance is not money sitting inside your phone. It is a record inside a system you do not control.
That is where trust becomes a problem. Whoever controls the record holds power over it. A payment can be delayed, rejected or reversed. An account can be frozen. Whatever the reason, your ability to use your money depends upon a decision made somewhere else.
The cypherpunks understood that privacy tools were only part of the battle. If digital money still needed a trusted gatekeeper, financial freedom still depended upon permission. Their question was not, “How do we find a better middleman?” It was, “Can we remove the middleman?”
That question would eventually lead towards Bitcoin. First, people had to discover why independent digital cash was so difficult to create.
First Principles
Conventional digital money depends upon trusted organisations keeping the official records.
Whoever controls those records has power over how the money may be used.
The problem is not simply whether the middleman is honest. It is that everyone must depend upon the middleman.
Today’s Challenge
Place a twenty dollar note beside your phone.
The note can pass directly from your hand to another person’s hand. No bank must change a record before the exchange can happen.
Now look at your banking app and imagine the send button has been disabled. Your balance still appears, but the system will not allow it to move.
Which form of money gives you direct control? Which one works only while someone else permits it?
